Khruangbin previewed new LP at Bowery Ballroom shows (pics, setlists ++ David Byrne’s walk-in playlist)

Khraungbin‘s new album A LA SALA is out this Friday, and ahead of that, and their tour supporting it, they played a trio of intimate fan club shows at Bowery Ballroom last week (3/27-3/29). Each night started with a set of older material, followed by an in-order playthrough of the new album, and night three also got an encore of a few older songs. You can see each night’s setlist below, along with pictures from the shows by Jackie Lee Young.

Nights two and three also got surprise openers – a DJ set from Questlove on night two and Khruangbin guitarist Marko on night three — and night one got a playlist of walk-in music from David Byrne, who was in attendance at the show but didn’t DJ his picks. He did write a little about the playlist, though:

I was invited to do some walk-in music for a small Khruangbin show on March 27th at the Bowery Ballroom in advance of their upcoming tour.

I did a ½ hour audio mix that has a few instrumental tracks at the end, but mostly consisted of an audio montage of ambient sounds I recorded including some short fragments from the film soundtracks of a Soviet (Georgian) film composer Mikael Tariverdiev (also check out more of his music here).

This is followed by a few instrumentals. A piece by pedal steel master Buddy Emmons (singing strings of steel),

2 pieces by Yugoslavian guitarist Branko Mataja,

A song by Hermanos Guitierrez called Low Sun,

And one by Son Rompe Pera called Luz de Luna.

Because it includes fragments of instrumental pieces it can’t be uploaded to streaming services without breaking it up into separate tracks. But you can hear it all here.
