Dog Date share their favorite “unhinged” songs & “Nirvana” video

NYC double-drummer punks Dog Date‘s new album Zinger comes out this Friday (4/12) on Pop Wig (pre-order), and they’ve just shared its third single, “Nirvana.” It’s a fuzzed-out ripper that comes with a video by director Dasha Belikov. It seems like an unsuspecting performance video at first, but things get weird. Check it out below.

Fittingly, Dog Date have also made us a list of their favorite “unhinged” songs. The list includes tracks by Nine Inch Nails, The Fall, The Stooges, Captain Beefheart, The Shaggs, Full of Hell, and more, with commentary on each pick. Check out what they had to say below.

They’ve also got upcoming tour dates, including a release show at Ridgewood, NY’s Trans-Pecos on April 19. Those dates are listed below too.

Dog Date’s Favorite “Unhinged” Songs

Dylan Kennedy (vocals, guitar):

Nine Inch Nails – “Last”
Hard to talk about unhinged music without bringing up Trent. This song is such a rocker, definitely has been on repeat lately. Pretty awesome in-your-face guitars on this just seal the deal for me, especially cool to hear them so prevalent on this EP. That bass on the chorus in combination with the shout along lyrics make it hard to not jump out of your seat to.

Kamikaze Palm Tree – “Flamingo”
Really wild and technically challenging band that I got absolutely hooked on. Listening to their newest record feels like watching cartoons on a warped VHS tape. Super sick new experimental rock, no one else doing it quite like them right now.

Malcolm Spraggs Hoyt (guitar):

The Fall – “Pay Your Rates”
Mark E Smith was a GIANT among the pitious english masses. Look around, do you see one soul as large and courageous as his? I don’t fuckin think so! PAY! YOUR! RATES!

The Stooges – “TV Eye”
I hear that opening riff and my eyeballs roll into the back of my head and i get a nosebleed. This shit makes me want to backflip put of a skyscraper into a meatgrinder. This whole record is def the stooges’ most feral too, so if you want no-hinge, go to the fun-house!

Leo Didkovsky (drums):

Captain Beefheart – “Ice Rose”
A staple for any dude with a weird enough dad. There is little I can say that will do this legendary band justice. They have paved the way for experimental rockers like no one else.

The Shaggs – “My Pal Foot Foot”
Everyone needs to know about The Shaggs. They are a fraught tale of a rock star vision shone through cooperative progeny. Their stilted riffs and angular drumming occupy the same part of my mind where dreams of a fucked up creature named foot foot reside.

Andy Stoffo (bass):

The B-52’s – “52 Girls”
Driven by an unrelenting beat, a killer riff, and simple lyrics delivered in a schoolyard chant, this song combines all my favorite aspects of the B-52’s. It just oozes old school monster movie cool.

Hot Machines – “Can’t Feel”
I heard this for the first time in Gareth Stehr’s part in the Foundation video, That’s Life. It got me instantly. I had just recently started playing guitar so I learned it to play with my friends in one of the first bands I ever played in. My favorite thing about this song is that it’s the same guitar part for the whole time. It just works.

Kristian Pitaccio (drums):

Small Womens – “Playing Trucks”
The most exciting songwriting and production I’ve heard in quite some time. Every song on their EP is explosive and emotional in a really refreshing way. Reminiscent of STRFKR, yet brings those cheeky lyrics and melodies to a new level. I love them and so should you if you know what’s good for you.

Full of Hell – “Doors To Mental Agony”
Brutal release from full of hell, they’ve covered so much ground within metal over the years but never fail to bring something new to the table. Groovy yet punishingly intense all in a minute and thirty seconds.
