Coachella 2024 wknd 1 pics & video: Doja Cat, Tyler, Lauryn Hill, Sky Ferreira, Blur + lots more

Coachella has wrapped up the first weekend of its 2024 edition — if you weren’t there, maybe you streamed it live — and as usual, it was a guest-filled affair. You can read more about Lana Del Rey‘s Friday headlining set, featuring Billie Eilish, Jack Antonoff, and Jon Batiste, HERE, as well as Deftones’ set, where they covered The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want,” and played “Combat” for the first time since 2011.

Other Friday surprises included Shakira, who came out during Bizarrap‘s set for “La fuerte” and her Bzrp Session, and announced a tour for her new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. Peso Pluma also had a few guests on hand to join him on their collaborative tracks: he brought out Becky G for “CHANEL,” Junior H. for “El Azul,” Santa Fe Klan for “NO SON KLLE,” and Arcángel for “PESO COMPLETO.”

Saturday at Coachella included No Doubt‘s anticipated reunion set, where they brought out Olivia Rodrigo for “Bathwater.” Grimes’ set didn’t have any guests, other than a giant mechanical spider, but it was cut short due to technical difficulties, which she later apologized for on social media. Blur brought out the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers for “Death of a Party” And “Tender” — and they also told the lackluster crowd, “You’re never seeing us again.”

Headlining Coachella on Saturday night, Tyler, the Creator looked back on his debut at the festival over a decade earlier, saying, “The first time I played Coachella was 2011. I didn’t know what the fuck Coachella was, but me and my friends at the time, we went by Odd Future. And it was great. We were in a house. We rented a crib, went to Target, n***a, bought some snacks, and performed. The performance was terrible. But it was awesome.” His masterful, high energy set this time included appearances from Childish Gambino (for “Running Out of Time”), A$AP Rocky (for “Potato Salad” and “Who Dat Boy”), and Kali Uchis (for “See You Again”).

Other Saturday guests included Billie Eilish, who made a surprise appearance for the second day in a row, this time at a Do LaB DJ set where she played clips of three songs off her new album Hit Me Hard and Soft for the first time, “Lunch,” “Chihiro,” and “L’Amour De Ma Vie.” Vampire Weekend, a last minute addition to weekend one, brought out two people to play cornhole: Paris Hilton (she warned the crowd “I haven’t played this game since The Simple Life” and asked “is it okay if I cheat?”) and someone dressed as Abraham Lincoln. Also, Nile Rodgers joined LE SSERAFIM on “Unforgiven;” Dom Dolla brought out Nelly Furtado for “Maneater” and “Eat Your Man;” Jon Batiste had Juvenile join him on “Back That Azz Up” and WILLOW on “Be Who You Are;” JUNGLE were joined by Erick the Architect on “Candle Flame” and Channel Tres on “I’ve Been in Love;” and Kevin Abstract brought out Sky Ferreira for a cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now,” Dominic Fike for “Crumble,” and Quadeca for “Texas Blue.”

Ice Spice didn’t bring out any guests for her Coachella debut on Saturday, but she did play a new song, which samples Sean Paul’s 2002 track “Gimme The Light.” She also shouted out “Taylor motherfucking Swift,” who was sighted in the crowd along with her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, before playing her version of “Karma.”

Doja Cat brought a spectacle for her Sunday headlining set, her return to the festival after last playing it in 2022. She also had a few guests on hand: South African a capella group The Joy for “Shutcho,” 21 Savage for “n.h.i.e.,” Teezo Touchdown for “MASC,” and A$AP Rocky for “URRRGE!!!!!!!!!!”

Earlier on Sunday, Will Smith came out for J. Balvin‘s set for “Men in Black,” dressed as his character for the film, and backed by a troop of aliens. Lil Yachty brought out Justine Skye for “running out of time” and Mac DeMarco for “On the Level” and “Chamber of Refelction.” YG Marley was joined by his mom, Lauryn Hill, for much of his set, including “Ex-Factor” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” They then brought out her Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean for “Fu-Gee-La,” and Busta Rhymes for “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and “Look At Me Now.”

Also on Sunday, Tems brought out Wizkid and Justin Bieber for “Essence;” Jhené Aiko had Tyga on hand for “Sunshine,” Saweetie for “My Type,” Omarion for “Post to Be,” and Big Sean for “Beware;” Metro Boomin joined NAV for much of his set; Boy Harsher brought out Mariana Saldaña for “Machina” and LUCY (Cooper B. Handy) for “Autonomy;” Kodak Black, Peso Pluma, and Robin S all joined DJ Snake; Renee Rapp brought out Kesha for “TiK ToK,” changing the lyric to “wake up in the morning like fuck P. Diddy;” Adrian Quesada from Black Pumas joined Hermanos Gutierrez; Katy Perry made an appearance during Mia Moretti‘s Do LaB set; Bebe Rexha brought out David Guetta for “I’m Good (Blue)” and Temper Trap vocalist Dougy Madagi joined John Summit.
