Chicago sludge/psych band REZN sign to Sargent House for new LP, share “Chasm”

Chicago psychedelic sludge metal band REZN have signed to Sargent House and announced their new album Burden, due June 14 via their new label home (pre-order). The album was recorded at Earth Analog with Matt Russell during the same 2021 sessions that produced 2023’s Solace, and the band decided to split the material up into two distinct albums, rather than release a double album.

The first taste of Burden is “Chasm,” a song that’s heavy, catchy, and trippy in equal measure, with a kaleidoscopic guitar solo from Russian Circles‘ Mike Sullivan. “We wrote ‘Chasm’ to depict the final phase of an existential descent, when you’re on the last few steps of the spiral staircase and realize there’s no going back,” says vocalist/guitarist Rob McWilliams. “We wanted it to sound like walls closing in on all sides and you’re looking at the exit getting further and further away. Mike’s melodic finger-tapping style blurs the section into a kind of dizzying, infernal panic attack. In the final moment of the song you’re faced with the repetitive churning of a molten, fuzzed-out wall of sound that builds until the audio itself starts to singe and catch fire, then abruptly self destructs.” Listen and watch the video (directed and shot by Tom Conway & Chris Owsiany) below.

REZN are opening part of Pallbearer‘s North American tour, and then heading to Europe and the UK to support Russian Circles. The tour with Pallbearer hits Brooklyn on June 20 at Music Hall of Williamsburg and that show also includes SubRosa offshoot The Keening. All dates are listed below.

Deedee from MSPAINT named Solace one of his favorite albums of 2023.
